Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.

The Complexity of Family Law

The aim in every family law case is to find a solution which best meets a client’s needs. Family law disputes are complicated because family law touches so many other areas of law and because the dispute is based on human relationships, which are complex and evolving. The difficult but rewarding challenge for every family lawyer in helping a particular client, is that each situation is different. There could be similar strategies we employ, but each case demands a unique approach.

Approach to Solving Family Law Disputes

Even though each case is different, the place to start is the same. We ask ourselves, “how do we solve this problem?” and “how can we make this situation better”? We have a range of options and tools but there is the greatest potential for success if a) clients are empowered with information about the law and process and b) we embark on a co-operative approach with the client to solve the problem. Whether a case settles after several months of negotiating or after multi year litigation, there is a greater chance for success if clients are educated about the issues, the law and the process so they may make informed decisions, and we have the necessary information to be able to make appropriate recommendations.

Information is Key

After having met with thousands of clients over many years, we’ve learned that information is key in assisting families to resolve their legal disputes. It empowers people to take action and to get to the place they need to be. The topics covered here are inspired by questions from clients we have helped. With this blog, we aim to provide information to others in similar situations.

Even though family law disputes can be challenging and difficult, we take an optimistic and progressive approach. We know that situations and families can evolve to get to a better place because we’ve seen it happen.
